How does a birth doula improve birth outcomes?
In 2017 a Cochrane review showed the following evidence on continuous support in childbirth:
- 39% decrease in the risk of cesareans
- 15% increase in the likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth
- 10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
- Shorter labours by 41 minutes on average
- 38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five-minute Apgar score
- 31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience
- There is some evidence that doula support in labor lowered rates of postpartum depression
- There was no evidence that there are any negative effects of doula support

Does a doula take the place of my partner/friend/family member during labour and birth?
Absolutely not! A doula supports the birthing person and their partner or family member in many different ways. Your doula can make suggestions on how they can support you emotionally or physically or simply facilitate their support. E.g. Your doula refills your water bottle and reminds your partner to offer it continuously during the pushing stage. Your doula can grab some food for your partner or give them a break to get some fresh air or rest. Your doula can also give your partner reminders and reassurance if they are unsure of anything or need advocacy reminders. Does a doula support in different settings (home, hospital, birth centre) with different medical care providers (Midwife or OB)?
100% yes! A doula is a non-medical support so we can support alongside whichever medical provider you choose. We often begin supporting you while you are in labour and before medical support is needed. We have taken the time to get to know you and we are a constant throughout the experience. We support your emotional and physical needs while your medical team is responsible for medical tasks.
The best way to find out how doula support might function for YOU is to have a 30 minute consultation. EMAIL ME today to set one up.
