Shifting Your Mood as the Days Get Shorter: 4 Simple Ways to Boost Your Energy

It’s that time of year again when we turn the clocks back and feel the shorter, darker, colder days right to our core. Our moods dip, our energy drops, and everything feels a little heavier. These seasonal shifts affect all of us differently — and if you’re expecting a baby or recently gave birth, it’s especially important to find ways to gently lift your mood and care for your emotional well-being.

This post isn’t meant to replace medical advice. If you notice that your down days are outnumbering your good days, please reach out to a healthcare professional. You deserve support.

While we can’t change the weather (if only!), we can do small, intentional things that help brighten our days from the inside out. Here are four simple ways to start shifting your energy today:

1. Eat Nourishing, Delicious Foods

Warm, satisfying meals can do wonders for your mood. Try a new recipe, cook alongside a loved one, or recreate a family favourite. Tantalizing your taste buds feels good — and sharing the process with someone you care about adds a layer of connection and comfort that we all crave during the colder months.

2. Prioritize Rest (and Embrace the Cozy Season!)

One perk of fall and winter? They’re perfect for napping. When your body is rested, your mood naturally lifts. If you have a newborn or young children, a family nap can be absolutely magical — a quiet moment of togetherness that leaves everyone feeling just a little more human.

3. Create a Calming, Cozy Environment (Cozy is my favourite word!)

Since most of us tend to hibernate anyway, make your space feel like a sanctuary. Diffuse calming essential oils, turn on soft lighting or a warm lamp, light a candle or the fireplace, and play your favourite music. Small sensory shifts can have a big emotional impact.

4. Have a Dance Party

Yes — really! From the time my kids were babies, spontaneous dance parties became our go-to way to reset the vibe. It’s silly, energizing, and the quickest mood booster I know. I still do it when I’m cleaning because it turns chores into something joyful.

As the days grow shorter and the world outside becomes quieter, it’s completely natural to feel your mood shift. These small, intentional practices can help bring a little more warmth, connection, and joy into your everyday life — especially during pregnancy or the postpartum period, when emotional well-being matters more than ever. Be gentle with yourself, take things one day at a time, and remember that you’re not alone. If your low days begin to feel overwhelming, reaching out for support is a strong and important step.

Brighter days — both literally and emotionally — are ahead.
